چکیده

Joachim Diederich, Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane), started with a brief introduction to connectionist modeling and parallel machines. Neural network modeling can be done on various levels of abstraction. On a low level of abstraction, a simulator can support the definition and simulation of "compartmental models," chemical synapses, dendritic trees etc., i.e. explicit computational models of single neurons. These models have been built by use of SPICE (DC Berkeley) and Genesis (Caltech). On a higher level of abstraction, the Rochester Connectionist Simulator (RCS~ University of Rochester) and ICSIM (lCSI Berkeley) allow the definition of unit types and complex connectivity patterns. On a very high level of abstraction, simulators like tleam (UCSD) allow the easy realization of pre-defined network architectures (feedforward networks) and leaming algorithms such as backpropagation.

Computational modeling of dynamic decision making using connectionist networks

In this research connectionist modeling of decision making has been presented. Important areas for decision making in the brain are thalamus, prefrontal cortex and Amygdala. Connectionist modeling with 3 parts representative for these 3 areas is made based the result of Iowa Gambling Task. In many researches Iowa Gambling Task is used to study emotional decision making. In these kind of decisio...

Connectionist psycholinguistics: capturing the empirical data.

Connectionist psycholinguistics is an emerging approach to modeling empirical data on human language processing using connectionist computational architectures. For almost 20 years, connectionist models have increasingly been used to model empirical data across many areas of language processing. We critically review four key areas: speech processing, sentence processing, language production, an...

Challenging the widespread assumption that connectionism and distributed representations go hand-in-hand.

One of the central claims associated with the parallel distributed processing approach popularized by D.E. Rumelhart, J.L. McClelland and the PDP Research Group is that knowledge is coded in a distributed fashion. Localist representations within this perspective are widely rejected. It is important to note, however, that connectionist networks can learn localist representations and many connect...

Hybrid Connectionist-Symbolic Modules: A Report from the IJCAI-95 Workshop on Connectionist-Symbolic Integration

need for such models has been growing slowly but steadily over the past five years. Some new, important approaches have been proposed and developed, some of which were presented at the workshop. In sum, the participants felt that it was definitely worthwhile to further pursue research in this area because it might generate important new ideas and significant new applications in the near future....

Massively Parallel Simulation of Structured Connectionist Networks: An Interim Report

We map structured connectionist models of knowledge representation and reasoning onto existing general purpose massively parallel architectures with the objective of developing and implementing practical, realtime knowledge base systems. Shruti, a connectionist knowledge representation and reasoning system which attempts to model reflexive reasoning, will serve as our representative connectioni...
